Birth – the core of midwifery work

The probably best-known part of a midwife’s profession is birth support. Midwives work where women give birth – this can be a range of places, from hospital, over a birth centre or midwife’s practice to your own home. If pregnancy and birth are normal, a midwife is the responsible caregiver in Austria. Austrian legislation requires that a midwife is consulted for birth and taking care of a newborn.

The midwife observes and frequently assesses the process of birth, supports the woman in labour and recognises any symptoms indicating a pathological development which renders medical intervention by an obstetrician or pediatrician necessary. In case of pathological situations, midwives collaborate with and support other medical professions and stay with the woman and her child. In case of emergeny, midwives carry out the necessary interventions if no doctor is present (yet).

Where shall I give birth?

Women with a pregnancy and medical history without complications are free to choose the place of birth and decide for themselves where they want to give birth to their baby – in hospital, in a birth centre, in a midwife’s practice or at home.

Is birth about to start?

Contractions, pre-labour, opening contractions or pushing contractions: All types of contractions fulfil their specific purpose and are sometimes difficult to distinguish.

How do I know if I am in labour and the birth is about to start? And when do I call my midwife?

Birth in hospital - reasons for and against

Most births in Austria take place in hospitals. Some of the reasons for or against this are listed here – the midwife of your choice will be happy to advise you and cater to your individual wishes and needs.
