Midwife care for miscarriages after the 18th week of pregnancy

Women who suffer a miscarriage after the 18th week of pregnancy are entitled to support from a midwife. This long-awaited change came into force on 1 September 2024 and represents a significant expansion of the previous regulation.

Long awaited new regulation

Until then, women who were already at an advanced stage of pregnancy and had suffered a miscarriage were not entitled to the help of a midwife. This changed on 1 September 2024. The new regulation now entitles women to midwife care as a health insurance benefit in the event of any pregnancy loss after the 18th week of pregnancy.

The Austrian Committee of Midwives ÖHG has been campaigning for some time for mothers who have suffered a pregnancy loss to receive midwife support during the postnatal period as a health insurance benefit. This has now been made legally possible from 1 September. Over the past few weeks, the midwives’ committee has been working intensively to implement the new regulation in practice. In future, affected women will be able to contact a midwife easily. For this purpose, a search term ‘care after miscarriage and stillbirth’ has been added to the midwife search [https://hebammen.at/eltern/hebammensuche/] on the ÖHG website.

Further concerns

Even after this progress, the Austrian Board of Midwives is still committed to improving the care of women with pregnancy loss. Further demands of the ÖHG, such as psychological or psychotherapeutic support and an appropriate time for convalescence and mourning, have unfortunately not yet been met and are on the agenda of the Board of Midwives as political demands.
