Midwife care for miscarriages after the 18th week of pregnancy
Women who suffer a miscarriage after the 18th week of pregnancy are entitled to support from a midwife. This long-awaited change came into force on 1 September 2024 and represents a significant expansion of the previous regulation.
Long awaited new regulation
Until then, women who were already at an advanced stage of pregnancy and had suffered a miscarriage were not entitled to the help of a midwife. This changed on 1 September 2024. The new regulation now entitles women to midwife care as a health insurance benefit in the event of any pregnancy loss after the 18th week of pregnancy.
The Austrian Midwives Association (ÖHG) has been campaigning for some time to ensure that mothers who have suffered a pregnancy loss receive midwifery care during the postpartum period as a health insurance benefit. As of 1 September 2024, this has been made possible by law. The Midwives’ Association has been working intensively to implement the new regulation in practice. Now, affected women are able to contact a midwife without any red tape. For this purpose, the search term ‘care after miscarriage and stillbirth’ has been added to the midwife search function on the ÖHG website.
Other concerns - coping with miscarriage:
Even after this progress, the Austrian Board of Midwives is still committed to improving the care of women with pregnancy loss. Further demands of the ÖHG, such as psychological or psychotherapeutic support and an appropriate time for convalescence and mourning, have unfortunately not yet been met and are on the agenda of the Board of Midwives as political demands.
