Choosing the place of birth

You are here: Startseite / For parents / Birth / Choosing the place of birth

Women with a pregnancy and medical history without complications are free to choose the place of birth and decide for themselves where they want to give birth to their baby – in hospital, in a birth centre, in a midwife’s practice or at home.

What’s the best place to give birth? – Tipps for decision-making….

In case of a high-risk pregnancy or complications a hospital is the best place to deliver your baby. If your pregnancy is low-risk, however, you have a variety of options.

Needs regarding the surrroundings for giving birth vary greatly among individuals. It is advantageous to choose a place where you have trust in the people working there and where you feel comfortable. This is an important foundation for being able to open up and relinquish control – essential processes for giving birth.

It helps to get to know the staff and place in person better before making a decision. In most cases there will be possibilities such as visiting a labour ward as part of an antenatal class or as stand-alone service. Equally you can participate in antenatal classes or consultations at a birth centre or midwife’s practice or you arrange a meeting with your midwife for a first impression.

As a lot of hospitals and midwives are booked out quickly, you should reach a decision early in pregnancy in order to be able to give birth at your preferred place.

Is it Is it necessary/possible for my partner to support me during birth?

In general, it is always possible for your partner to accompany you as support person during birth. Even in case of a planned caesarean section, it is a normal procedure to have your partner with you. To be sure about the details, ask your hospital-of-choice beforehand.

A crucial aspect to consider is that both of you really want it. A partner can be with you while delivering the baby but it is not a must! Both of you should feel comfortable with the decision. If you rather choose another support person – for whatever reason – or if you do not have a partner, it is always possible to bring someone else you trust.
